Julia Croome joined Ecojustice in 2016 after practicing municipal, environmental, and land-use litigation first at a boutique, then a large downtown Toronto firm.
Julia has litigated at all levels of court and played a significant role in major cases holding governments and decision-makers accountable. Particularly noteworthy work includes Smith v. Inco – the largest certified environmental class action in Canada – and Mathur, the youth-led Charter climate case against the Ontario government. She also led Ecojustice’s work on federal climate accountability, and was lead author of “A New Canadian Climate Accountability Act”, a report which heavily informed the eventual federal legislation. In October 2024, Julia received the Clean50 Award for her contributions to Canadian sustainability and the clean economy.
Julia is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, where she has run the Environmental Law Externship since 2011.
Julia earned an Honors BArtsSci in the multi-disciplinary Arts & Science Programme at the University of McMaster, a MA in history at the University of Toronto Institute for the History & Philosophy of Science & Technology and her JD at the University of Toronto.
