In a time of increased political uncertainty, it’s important political leaders do not lose sight of protecting public health and safety and the environment.

2024 was the hottest year on record for our planet.

Last summer, out-of-control wildfires tore through Western Canada, with air quality warnings across British Columbia, Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and parts of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Fires reached the town of Jasper, forcing more than 25,000 people to flee and causing widespread damage.

Science shows that climate change — fuelled by burning coal, oil, and gas — is making wildfires bigger, hotter, and more frequent, creating what experts call “supercharged” wildfire seasons.

We need to rein in the destruction while we still can.

Failing to address climate change is costing us, it’s costing you — from rebuilding after climate disasters to higher insurance premiums for our homes to rising grocery prices due to supply chain disruptions.

Wildfires know no borders, and no community is immune to a global climate emergency.

Parliament may be prorogued but your members of parliament (MPs) are still accountable to their constituents.

Enough is enough. Elected officials must put people and the planet first.

Here are four things your MP can do to build firebreaks for the climate emergency:

  • Implement a strong, loophole-free cap on oil and gas emissions
  • Stop approving new fossil fuel projects
  • Ban thermal coal exports immediately
  • Regulate our financial industry to stop billions pouring into oil, gas, and coal developments
