Science shows us safeguarding healthy ecosystems is our best ally in the fight against climate change. But nature can’t do it alone. Last year at COP15 in Montreal, 196 countries ratified the Global Biodiversity Framework, a landmark deal which included a commitment to protect 30 per cent of lands and oceans by 2030.
Then, at COP28 this month, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault formally announced the Government of Canada’s commitment to introduce a federal nature accountability bill in 2024. Ecojustice supporters played an important role in achieving this milestone, sending more than 1,000 letters to Prime Minister Trudeau calling on the government to commit to enshrining Canada’s nature targets into law.
