Nature is incredible. Keeping it intact is also our best bet for the survival of the world we hope to pass on to future generations. But our natural biodiversity is in crisis.
Climate change, pollution, habitat destruction and overexploitation of natural resources are pushing the planet to its brink. In turn, rampant nature loss is accelerating the impacts of climate change.
The biodiversity and climate crises are two sides of the same coin. But while the problems are closely connected, the good news is, so are the solutions.
Science shows us safeguarding healthy ecosystems is our best ally in the fight against climate change. But nature can’t do it alone. In 2022 at COP15 in Montreal, 196 countries ratified the Global Biodiversity Framework, a landmark deal which included a commitment to protect 30 per cent of lands and oceans by 2030.
Then, at COP28 last fall, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault formally announced the Government of Canada’s commitment to introduce a federal nature accountability bill in 2024. Ecojustice supporters played an important role in achieving this milestone, sending more than 1,000 letters to Prime Minister Trudeau calling on the government to commit to enshrining Canada’s nature targets into law.
Now, we need your help again as we push for the government to pass a strong law that sets effective and enforceable legal standards and respects Indigenous rights. Send a letter to Prime Minister Trudeau today.
