Call it a win (for now) for the climate.

Pieridae Energy has come up short in its bid to create Goldboro LNG, a liquified natural gas project proposed in Nova Scotia, because it has failed to secure the money needed to move the project forward.

The news comes after environmental groups including Ecojustice, community organizations, and people across Canada urged the federal government to reject Pieridae’s request for $1 billion in financial assistance for the project.

This is another powerful example of what is possible when we mobilize to demand our governments make responsible decisions that protect the interests of real people over those of polluters.

But we’re not in the clear yet. Pieridae has signaled that it will continue to look for ways to break ground on Goldboro LNG. To that end, the Ecojustice team’s work on this file will continue.

We have pushed for the project to undergo a full federal impact assessment. This week, we launched a lawsuit seeking greater scrutiny of the province’s environmental assessment decision for a road realignment necessary for the Goldboro LNG project to proceed.

A report from Environmental Defence reveals that the federal government dropped close to $18 billion in subsidies and other forms of financial support on the fossil fuel industry last year — this despite the federal Liberals’ public commitments to move the country to a post-carbon economy.

Securing a safer climate future means saying no to more fossil fuel extraction and export. And it definitely means investing in climate solutions instead of using public dollars to prop up projects that will only further fuel global climate chaos.

The fossil fuel industry and their political allies have worked hard to convince us that more extraction and exports are inevitable and essential for our economy. But we know that’s simply not true.

Transitioning to a clean energy economy can both include and benefit everyone. We can clean up pollution, create quality jobs, help end historic injustices, and help our communities thrive.

Your continued support will continue to play an important role in realizing this vision of a climate-safe future for everyone in Canada. Thank you for standing with us.
