Dr. Anna Reid

Vice President of the Board

Anna Reid received her honours degree in wildlife biology at the University Of Guelph in 1981 and in 1986 she completed her medical degree at the University of Ottawa. In 1988 she completed her family practice residency (rural stream) through the University of British Columbia and in 2000 she returned to Vancouver to complete further critical care training.

Anna worked as a rural locum in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories, primarily with aboriginal communities, before settling into a comprehensive family practice in Nelson BC until 2000. She then practiced as an emergency room and intensive care unit physician at Kootenay Lake Hospital before moving to Yellowknife in 2008, where she practices emergency, transport and hospitalist medicine. Anna has held leadership positions as Medical Director in two hospitals.

Early in her career, Anna volunteered with the Himalayan Rescue Association in Nepal, where she became interested in health care delivery and the importance of advocating for the disadvantaged. She continues to be deeply concerned about the homeless, mentally ill and addicted patients who face inequities in care. Interest in these systems issues led to her becoming President of the Northwest Territories Medical Association from 2009 to early 2011 and subsequently the Canadian Medical Association in 2012-3.

Environmental issues have always been of deep concern for Anna in terms of the health of the planet, but also with respect to human population health and individual holistic health. She keeps healthy largely by going on wilderness expeditions and immersing herself in nature at every opportunity.  Known as a mediator and consensus-seeker, Anna brings a strong work ethic, sense of humour, vision and passion to all of her endeavours. She lives with her spouse, Linda, who is her constant support and source of inspiration.
