This fall, the Alberta legislature may vote on whether to adopt recommendations made in the Mature Asset Strategy (MAS) on aging oil and gas wells.

This proposal suggests shifting the clean-up costs of abandoned and inactive wells away from industry — without clear guidelines on who would pay for it. That could leave taxpayers like you footing the multi-billion-dollar bill.

Ahead of a possible vote, nearly 200 Albertans took part in this virtual town hall hosted by our coalition partners on October 2nd 2025 to learn about the inactive wells problem and discuss ways to solve it.

Watch it here:

In it, you’ll hear from:

  • Ecojustice’s Susanne Calabrese offering a closer legal look at the flawed process that birthed the flawed MAS product
  • Coalition for Responsible Energy (C4RE) offering on-the-ground insights into the “drill-and-dash” well problem
  • The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) on health concerns associated with inactive, abandoned, and orphan wells
  • A local landowner about how the MAS would affect them and their community
