Ecojustice responds to statements from BC Conservative leader John Rustad

February 24, 2025

VANCOUVER/UNCEDED xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (MUSQUEAM), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (SQUAMISH), AND səlilwətaɬ (TSLEIL-WAUTUTH) TERRITORIES –Ecojustice director of law reform, Muhannad Malas, responds to BC Conservative Leader John Rustad’s comments today calling for increased transparency from environmental organizations:

“Rustad’s statements are a distraction from what is truly needed right now: elected officials focused on working together on real solutions that help support communities.

“The economic crisis and U.S.-Canada trade war should not be cynically used by political leaders to push through an anti-environment deregulation agenda, and certainly not to falsely target the important work of environmental public interest organizations.

“Ecojustice is proud of the critical role we play in protecting the environment in Canada. We have nothing to hide about where or who our funding comes from, nor will we be intimidated by political attacks on our funding or our work by this government or any other government.”

About

Ecojustice uses the power of the law to defend nature, combat climate change, and fight for a healthy environment. Our strategic, public interest lawsuits and advocacy lead to precedent-setting court decisions and law and policy that deliver lasting solutions to Canada’s most urgent environmental problems.

The majority of Ecojustice’s funding (about 75 per cent), comes from individuals. This includes the more than 19,000 individual Canadians who share our vision of a thriving environment, safe climate, and healthy communities. The remaining funding comes from family foundations and organizations concerned about the environment.

In 2024, less than one per cent of Ecojustice donors were from the U.S. Typically only seven per cent of total donations come to Ecojustice from U.S. donors.

As Canada’s largest environmental law charity, Ecojustice operates offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, and Halifax.
