Ecojustice reacts to the election of Mark Carney as Liberal Party leader

March 10, 2025

OTTAWA/TRADITIONAL, UNCEDED TERRITORY OF THE ALGONQUIN ANISHNAABEG PEOPLE —   Ecojustice director of law reform, Muhannad Malas issued the following reaction to election of new Liberal Party of Canada leader, Mark Carney:

“Ecojustice offers its congratulations to Mark Carney on winning yesterday’s Liberal leadership race. This is a crucial moment for Canada. We are facing unprecedented ecological threats, an affordability crisis and an unjustified trade war led by the U.S. Trump administration. As Canada’s next Prime Minister, we call on Mr. Carney to lead with courage and prioritize policies that protect workers and households and put Canada on track to transition its economy away from fossil fuels.

“Canada’s made significant progress on climate change and taken important steps to protect the country’s abundant biodiversity and reduce pollution. Now is the time for Canada to continue to build on that progress and propel our economy toward renewable energy and circular solutions that will create sustainable jobs.

“As we approach the federal election, Ecojustice strongly urges all federal party leaders to demonstrate to Canadians that unlike President Trump, elected officials in Canada will put people, communities and ecosystems ahead of company executives and billionaire profits. Centering rigorous environmental protection goes hand in hand with achieving economic independence from the U.S. and will support Canada’s push for diversifying trade relationships.”
