Help Misty protect endangered orcas

I have long admired Misty MacDuffee, a scientist with British Columbia-based Raincoast Conservation Foundation.

Misty‘s lifelong commitment to using science to protect the environment makes her my Ecojustice Hero.

When we were getting ready to file our evidence during the Kinder Morgan pipeline review, we needed statements from each expert, including Misty. At the time, she was surveying fish on the Fraser River. Misty literally motored back to Vancouver, where we carefully commissioned her affidavit — on the trunk of her car!

Now, as we work with Misty to gear up for the next phase of the battle to save the orcas and defend B.C.’s coast, I’m inviting you to double your impact.
A generous Ecojustice supporter has pledged up to $50,000 to match, dollar-for-dollar, every donation made before July 1. Double your impact when you donate today and support our ongoing work with Misty to protect endangered orcas.

What makes Misty so special is how effectively she communicates her scientific understanding to fishers, government decision-makers, and everyone whose activities impact nature. And thanks to your support, the Ecojustice team helps Misty bring that science into the courtroom.

She is a key partner in our work to protect endangered orcas and contributed to the groundbreaking Raincoast-commissioned research — a population viability analysis of the Southern Residents — which showed that this iconic species has a 50 per cent chance of becoming extinct if the pipeline is built.

Last week, the federal government said it will use taxpayer dollars to buy the pipeline. We say that’s a risky bet given the pipeline’s fate is still subject to multiple unresolved legal challenges. The federal government has also formally acknowledged that the Southern Residents face “imminent risks” to their recovery. Such recognition comes with a legal responsibility to implement protections.

Misty’s research and expertise will undoubtedly play a key role as we double down on our efforts to protect B.C.’s endangered orcas.

But we can’t do it without you.

Please make a gift today and help us continue supporting heroes like Misty — and all of our clients — who are courageously fighting for a brighter environmental future.

We represent every one of our clients free of charge. When you donate to Ecojustice, you do more than support a single organization, you strengthen an entire movement. Please make a gift today.
