Canada’s Green Recovery: How we get to #BetterThanNormal

The federal government is about to press the reset button on its political agenda. On September 23 it will deliver a new Speech from the Throne and set out the issues it will prioritize for the rest of its mandate. It’ll also be an important test of the federal government’s commitment to a green and just recovery.

Right now, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his key ministers are drafting the Speech from the Throne. We need you to help us keep the pressure on to make sure important issues like fighting the climate emergency, regulating environmental pollution, and investing in a sustainable future are top of mind.

Here are three actions you can take today to make sure they get the message:

Demand a green and just recovery

The federal government is about to give the Canadian economy a multi-billion dollar kick-start in an effort to recover from the COVID-19 health crisis. Those funds must be invested in sustainable jobs and emissions reductions that get Canada to net-zero, not prop up a failing oil and gas industry.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to invest in a green recovery and put Canada on a sustainable path to a safer, healthier future.

Tell your MP to support a green and just recovery for all Canadians.

Tell the PM Justin Trudeau to renew his commitment to climate accountability

A green and just recovery must be grounded in a climate accountability law — a proven way to reduce emissions and ensure government accountability for transitioning away from fossil fuels and towards a fair and sustainable economy.

Since the Liberals were re-elected, largely due to the strength of their climate platform, the world has changed. One thing remains constant: We were in a climate emergency before the pandemic, we are in one now, and we will continue to be in one even once the pandemic passes.

Send a letter to your local MP, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister Freeland and Minister Wilkinson today and urge them to keep a climate accountability law on the federal government’s legislative agenda.

Remind the feds to deliver on their CEPA promise

The Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) is Canada’s cornerstone environmental law. It also hasn’t been updated in 20 years and is no longer up to the task of keeping Canadians safe from 21st-century toxic substances and pollution.

The federal government has committed to updating the Act so it better protects Canadians from modern-day threats, but we need to make sure that bringing this law into the 21st century stays on the federal agenda when Parliament resumes this fall.

Call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to keep the federal government’s promise to reform CEPA.
