Call him Mr. Forgetful: Day 21 of Gavin’s Ride for Ecojustice

Day 21
July 1

Distance Travelled: 69.4 km (Lodging: American Legion campground, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota)

I had breakfast with Cindy and called Jenna for the last time before we would meet in Fargo on July 3, which suddenly seemed extremely close and real. I had to buy a phone card at Wal-mart, where I saw fourth of July “yeast rings” for sale (which were essentially donuts). Not sure on the marketing choice for a name there. I had lunch at Toad Lake in blazing heat… lay shirtless on a slab of rock with my feet in the water and went swimming.

I rolled into Detroit Lakes mid-afternoon, which turned out to be a relatively large and attractive lakeside town. The American Legion campground, right across from the lake, was full because of the fourth of July and the fact that Minnesota had closed all of its state parks on July 1 due to the failure to pass a state budget before the deadline that day. Fortunately the park managers let me set up camp in their backyard and charged me half-price because it wasn’t an actual campsite. I went for dinner and a beer at a lakeside tavern, getting indoors just as it started to pour.

All that talk of the fourth of July and no mention of Canada’s 144st birthday. We’ll let that one slide and since this post was so short we’ll add another one later in the day.
